The Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector serves as the engine of inclusive growth and the economic backbone of Assam. In alignment with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India), the Government of Assam is dedicated to nurturing a vibrant, resilient, and globally competitive MSME ecosystem that harnesses the unique strengths and opportunities of the North-Eastern region.

Rooted in enterprise, innovation, and inclusivity, Assam’s MSME sector stands as a cornerstone of industrial and economic development, driving employment generation, regional balance, and sustainable progress. With a strong focus on empowering local entrepreneurs, promoting ease of doing business, and fostering sustainable industrial growth across both urban and rural landscapes, the state continues to pave the way toward an equitable and self-reliant economy.

Mission: To stimulate the establishment, growth and competitiveness of MSMEs in Assam by providing end-to-end support technology assimilation, finance facilitation, infrastructure access, capacity building and market linkage thereby fostering employment, livelihood generation and value-added industrial activity.

Why MSMEs Matter for Assam

The MSME segment stands as the backbone of Assam’s industrial framework. With its unique strengths in handloom, sericulture, agro-processing, bamboo & forest-based industries, and emerging manufacturing clusters, it plays a pivotal role in generating jobs, harnessing local resources, and linking traditional craft with modern markets. Research underscores that the MSME sector in Assam is more prominent than in many other North-Eastern states.

Strategic Focus Areas

The priority focus for MSME development in Assam includes:

Nurturing entrepreneurship and micro-enterprise creation especially in rural and semi-urban regions. Facilitating access to credit, subsidy, technology and infrastructure for small and medium units, aligning with national frameworks provided by the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (Mo MSME).

  1. Promoting value-added industries based on Assam’s core strengths: handloom, textiles (such as Eri & Muga silk), bamboo & forest-based products, food processing, and niche manufacturing.
  2. Encouraging cluster-development and common facility centers to reduce unit-costs, enhance competitiveness, and promote collective growth of enterprises.
  3. Strengthening market access to domestic & export branding of regional products and integrating Assam MSMEs into national and global supply chains.
  4. Fostering skill-upgradation, technological upgrading, and quality-certification so MSMEs can participate confidently in modern value chains.
