Wild almonds, found in the hilly regions of Assam, are indigenous nut varieties known for their earthy flavour and nutritional richness. They are collected locally and used in traditional snacks and household consumption.
Wild almond species occur naturally in Assam’s forested hill regions, particularly in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. These almonds are smaller than commercial almonds but are valued for their unique taste, oil content, and cultural significance. Traditionally harvested by local communities, wild almonds are sun dried and used in roasted snacks, local food preparations, and traditional remedies. Though production is small-scale and seasonal, wild almonds hold potential for niche markets, including organic, tribal, and specialty food segments. With proper processing and branding, they can become a unique agro forest product from Assam.
