Made using eco-friendly materials such as bamboo, clay, cloth, and cow dung, these masks depict characters from Hindu mythology. The craft was introduced in the 16th century for devotional theatre and is closely associated with the cultural traditions of Majuli. Skilled artisans create vibrant masks representing mythological characters, deities, animals, and other traditional figures using traditional techniques. These masks reflect the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Majuli and are used in cultural performances, festivals, exhibitions, and as decorative items. The traditional Majuli mask craft received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2024.
