Japi making is an indigenous cottage industry of Assam. Japis are traditionally made using bamboo or cane and palm leaves (tokou). As the materials required for making Japi are easily available locally, Japi making is a popular traditional craft, particularly in the rural areas of Assam. There are various types of Japi, including Bor Japi, Tupi Japi, Uka Japi or Haluwa Japi, and Sorudaya Japi or Fulam Japi. Owing to its high demand in the market, Fulam Japi is produced in large numbers by skilled Japi makers. Japi products from Baksa district are handcrafted using traditional techniques and are known for their distinctive patterns, detailed weaving, and functional as well as decorative value. Traditionally used to provide protection from the sun and rain, Japi is also widely used as a decorative and cultural item during festivals, traditional functions, ceremonies, and other occasions.
