A large segment of India’s workforce comprises traditional artisans and craftspeople who work with their hands and tools, often operating in the informal sector.
These individuals—referred to as Vishwakarmas—include blacksmiths, goldsmiths, potters, carpenters, sculptors, and several other traditional trades.
Their skills are typically passed down through generations under the guru–shishya model within families and artisan communities.
In this context, the Government of India launched the PM Vishwakarma Scheme, aimed at improving the quality, capability, and reach of products and services delivered by these artisans.
The scheme provides holistic, end-to-end support to help them move up the value chain, integrate into domestic and global markets, and uplift their socio-economic status.
