Silk cocoon production is one of Assam’s most distinctive agro based industries, with the state being the natural home of Muga silk, along with Eri and Mulberry varieties. Sericulture provides livelihood to thousands of rural households, especially women, through rearing, cocoon production, reeling, spinning, weaving, and fabric making. Silk cocoons are processed into raw silk, yarn, handwoven fabrics, stoles, sarees, scarves, and designer textiles, highly valued for their durability, sheen, and cultural heritage.
